France – An introduction

France is the second largest country in Europe after Ukraine. Geographically located in Western Europe, it is surrounded by countries like Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Andorra. French is the major language in the country. Paris is the capital and also the largest commercial centre in France. Some of the other large cities include Marseilles, Lyon, Nice, Bordeaux and Lille. France emerged as a major world power and civilisation through the middle ages and influenced some of the major traditions in Europe and the rest of the world.

France is well known for its gastronomy, in fact, French gastronomy was awarded UNESCO world heritage status in 2010. Cheese and wine form an integral part of French Cuisine, both being produced in France on a large scale. Some of the other major industries in France include Aircraft production, Iron & Steel, chemicals, industrial machinery and luxury goods. Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Cartier are some world famous French Luxury Brands. France has been the pioneer in some areas for example inventing the game of tennis or the current metric system and also playing host to the largest cycle race in the world called ‘ Tour De France ‘ which is more than 100 years old.

France is the most visited country in the World with Eiffel tower being the most visited tourist site in France. France ranks fifth among countries with maximum UNESCO World heritage sites. The French Railway network is considered to be one of the best in the world with high speed trains such as TGV connecting most major cities. The country is also connected with an efficient network of roadways making it easier for tourists to travel. Historical sites, Architectural genius, gastronomy, natural beauty are some of the factors making France a must visit on a European tour.
